Founder & Attorney

Experienced Leadership. Practical Legal Solutions.

Katie M. Swancy is the founder of Swancy Law, LLC, where she combines extensive governmental, litigation, and policy experience with practical legal counsel for individuals, businesses, and public entities throughout South Carolina.

Before founding Swancy Law, Katie served as General Counsel for the Chester County Sheriff’s Office, where she advised the Sheriff, command staff, and county law enforcement personnel on a broad range of legal issues affecting daily governmental operations. In that role, she provided strategic legal guidance on civil litigation, employment matters, constitutional law, law enforcement liability, internal investigations, policy development, risk management, public records compliance, contract review, and agency governance. She worked closely with agency leadership to proactively identify legal risks, implement best practices, and develop policies designed to protect both the agency and the public.

Katie’s governmental experience has given her a unique understanding of how public entities make decisions, evaluate legal risk, and respond to complex legal challenges. She is known for providing practical, solutions-oriented advice that helps clients prevent problems before they become litigation while remaining prepared to aggressively advocate when disputes arise.

Earlier in her career, Katie served as an attorney for the South Carolina Department of Social Services, representing the agency in abuse and neglect proceedings and advocating for the safety and well-being of children throughout York and Union Counties. She also worked with the Children’s Law Center, assisting the South Carolina Joint Citizens and Legislative Committee on Children in researching legislation and developing statewide policy affecting children and families. She later entered private practice, representing clients in family law matters including divorce, child custody, visitation, support, and adoption.

Katie earned her Juris Doctor from the University of South Carolina Joseph F. Rice School of Law, where she completed the Children’s Law Concentration and served as both a Peer Mentor and member of the Children’s Advocacy Law Society. She received her Bachelor of Science in Psychology and Criminology from Florida State University, providing a foundation that continues to influence her thoughtful and client-centered approach to legal representation.

Today, Katie focuses her practice on advising governmental entities, businesses, and individuals through complex legal issues with the same strategic, preventative approach she developed while serving as in-house counsel. Whether counseling public officials, drafting policies and contracts, assisting employers, or representing clients in litigation, Katie is committed to delivering responsive, practical, and trusted legal guidance.
